2016 Lismore Diocesan Open Basketball Championships
The carnival was played in great spirit with entertaining games in all pools. Thank you to convener Leroy Conroy.
A huge thank you to Dylan Parberry and other members of the stadium staff, officials Sharon Reeves and Grant Conroy.  Also the most important man on the planet - referee co-ordinator Travis Slater.
St John's ambulance were kept busy -  professionally attending to the usual ankle and finger sprains during the day.
Semi finals are always tense affairs with SJPC Coffs dispatching Trinity Lismore 57-20 in the first girl's semi-final..
The other semi resulted in Woodlawn beating Mackillop Port 48-46 after blowing an 18 point lead.
The girls final was a spirited contest with SJPC Coffs Harbour  prevailing over Woodlawn 43-32.
The first boy's semi was a cracker with Mackillop Port edging out St Joseph's Port 51-48 in an exciting encounter. Semi number two saw SJPC Coffs boys win 88-38 over Woodlawn College.
As expected the final was a close contest with the Coffs boys slipping out to a comfortable lead only to see the Port boys storm back into the match with clutch 3 pointers to get within 4 points of the host school with 2 minutes left on the clock.
Desperate defence and strong rebounding enabled the Coffs team to regain control and run out winners 53-42 in a match the Port captain dedicated to the late Gerard O'Brien who sadly passed away earlier this year whilst playing touch.
Gerard had been the backbone of St Paul's/Mackillop basketball for over 20 years.
Gerard would be proud of the manner in which the Mackillop teams conducted themselves at the carnival.
NSWCCC Open basketball finals will be held at Penrith/Hawksbury in mid June. Entries via the CSSS website.

NSW All Schools Title 2012 - JPC Coffs Harbour

John Paul College Coffs Harbour Open Girls' Basketball team has just won the 2012 NSW All Schools Champion Schools competition at Penrith Basketball Stadium.

In the semi final the girls defeated Westfield's Sports High School 61 - 59 in a close match. Westfield is a specialist sports school with high level players from all of the Sydney metropolitan area so to defeat them was an achievement in itself.

The win over Westfield meant a finals berth against Smith's Hill High School, Wollongong.

JPC led for most of the match to run out 56 - 46 winners. The opposition team comprised 4 girls from the South Coast CHS Regional team.

This is the first All Schools title taken out by John Paul in any sport!

The team members are Rochelle Goodhand, Bronte Emanuel, Sam Bastick, Siarn Woods, Georgie Hewitt, Jessi Reeves, Jordi Woods, Bianca Goodhand and Allyson Willmott.

Coach Connie Woods and manager Sharon Reeves are to be applauded as well for the manner in which they prepared the girls not only for this event but over the past two years.

The team has now qualified for the National Schools Basketball Tournament in the Champions division in Melbourne early December.

Congratulations team, coach and manager!! Good luck at the Nationals.

Selection for School Sport Australia Basketball
John Paul College Coffs Harbour Yr 11 student Jessi Reeves (2nd from R, front row in photo below) has just been selected in the NSW All Schools Basketball Team that will compete in the School Sport Australia Championships later this year. In a very competitive sport that is played right across NSW and Australia, Jessi has been rewarded for her talent, hard work and dedication stretching back almost 10 years. For most of that time she has been training/playing at least 5 days a week!

Well done and best wishes Jess!
